I got Sideways Stories and Wayside School is Falling Down a dozen or so years ago, to see if they held up, and...they do. I still (at 44, so more than 35 years since reading the books as a kid) regularly think about the kid who got a tattoo of a potato on his ankle because he really liked potatoes, and he figured he would always really like potatoes.
Beautiful and wise words to that amazing letter-writer. I’m so sad about the situation, and filled with hope for people who are trying to make things better. It must be horrendous for teens who feel like what’s happening now will never change ever
I live in a Chicago suburb and we have a local LGBTQ group that does a project card campaign where they send hundreds and hundreds, by this point probably thousands, of cards to members of the LGBTQ across the country who need a pick me up and a smile. I think it started as just Christmas cards and now it seems to be year round. I would be happy to share more details so the group could flood the kids’ mailbox with love. I am not sure if DMs are allowed as I am new to Substack but am not sure if I should share the group publicly.
Another fine newsletter, Josh. Thanks for sharing a topic that is important and intertwined in our lives.
To the Foster Family, I’d like to add my family and I are focusing on what is in our control over these next 4 years. We’re going to volunteer in our community to try and put our energy into things we can do. 4 years seems like a lot but it’s not really.
What a great pep talk.
Also, I hope your buffalo gig is good enough to get you a beach house up there.
Hahahaha!

I think about that all the time!!!
I also say "It was purple." to myself more often than you'd expect.
I honestly got distracted reading this when you mentioned there's an Anna's in Woburn as I had to map that out for myself.
Understandable!

Thank you for these lovely giggles and reminders of our humanity. It really helps me in the midst of the horrors. ❤️
Thank YOU!
So much love to that reader and their amazing kids.
