i love and resonate with this: "While we were away, I read Steven Wright’s novel Harold. Steven Wright is one of my favorite comedians, and his wry, poetic insights are strewn throughout the book in the same way that a jazz quintet playing very free and loose occasionally locks into a beautiful groove for a few seconds at a time."
Went back and re-read this newsletter after the "This Day" podcast taping in Boston and running into you at Otto next door-ish. I tried not to be the guy who-bothers-post-show - so I didn't tell you the weird kind of relevant anecdote about when as a professional environmental advocate/ lawyer I wrote a joke for recently elected Governor Mitt Romney.
My boss (head of enviro group) was hired by Romney and they were doing an official proclamation about it ("Whereas, this is a great guy" etc). My boss was a member of the 1968 Olympic crew (rowing) team and was still very athletic. So I contributed, "Whereas, Governor Romney has a long history of making himself look more impressive by standing next to Olympic athletes" - which amazingly his staff accepted and used
I hope that you and Maris had a great time in Florida. You should come here more often, it’s not *all* Florida man! I totally enjoyed the show in Orlando last Friday. Lots of good laughs and good vibes! I’m pretty sure that photo is from the Orlando show and I think I even saw you take it unless I’m hallucinating which I wouldn’t completely rule out. PS I always enjoy your newsletters and read them in my head with your voice. Totally makes my day!
Aww thanks so much! I think this particular photo was from Atlanta! I got one of just me in front of the crowd in Orlando, but I’m making a face so goofy that shocked even me, someone who sees my face every day.
Your pep talk for Drake was *chef's kiss*. But Josh, you're a basketball fan - you could have used Spanish hooper Sergio Llull instead of parallelogram!
I submit humbly that it would be nice, dare I say terrific, if in the near future, Josh Gondelman were to perform in the humble Midwestern hamlet of Detroit, MI or its surrounding metro area.
Zombie, I am also recovering from (yet another! Third in less than two years!!) a major medical crisis that involved surgery and hospitalization and a long recovery time, and... yeah, I get what you're feeling. I don't have advice, alas. I just want you to know you aren't alone.
“The album overall is a little sprawling and stylistically chaotic in the way that things can get when duos are on the verge of a breakup not that I’d professionally know anything about that!” No but I need desus and mero back in my life😔
I love Mondays because of your newsletter (really--not just blowing smoke--I so look forward to this!!!), and I couldn't stop laughing at your pep talk for Drake! Thank you for making the world better.
I would presume that it's because horse-, bull-, and dogshits were the ones most commonly cleaned up by early English speakers, who had probably never seen or even heard of a hippopotamus.
dear josh,
great stuff as always!

Hahaha oh wow that sounds like a real challenge!

I was in Detroit almost exactly a year ago and would love to return sometime in the near future!
Loved the show in Ft Lauderdale and hope Maris enjoyed her birthday song!
Thank you!! And she did!
